| >A language exchange is when two people with different native languages meet and practice talking and listening using each other’s languages. Each partner will get the most from the exchange if they are open and willing to share their culture as well as their language.
The language exchange can be either informal (meeting in a park, cafe or bar) or formal, you will usually be able to tell
Although you may already be attending language lessons in a school, the language exchange differs greatly from class. Your partner will rarely be a teacher themselves, instead, they are usually just like you, interested in learning a new language and meeting new people in a relaxed environment. The language exchange offered on theparisienexpat.com fall under two categories; 1.Paris and 2.World Wide. Paris language exchanges are usually conducted face to face, whereas world language exchanges are conducted by email, telephone and skype.

| CHOOSING A PARTNER |
|
>In Paris, the expatriate community is enormous and there many people interested in learning new languages/cultures or improving their existing level. You can be confident in the knowledge that when you place language exchange advertisement you will receive a dozen replies within the week. To attract the right type of response you should state your expectations in your advertisement.
Our format is simple, list the languages you offer, the languages sought, your contact details and a message. The message section is important as this sets the stage for the type of respondant you’ll attract. For example, if you are female and are only interested in exchanging with another female, this is the place it should be stated. Many will list their hobbies and interests, afterall, many exchanges form into friendships. |
| THE FORMAT |
| >The format and structure of a language exchange is not fixed, and shouldn’t be approached in a rigid manner (remember its fun!), however the basic approach is usually meeting in a mutually agreed location and then conversing in one language for 30 minutes, pausing for a break and then continuing in an alternative language for another 30 minutes. The partners will usally tell storys of their home country, their experiences in Paris, their travels etc. Indeed it is very similar to meeting a friend in a cafe and having a general conversation…….. |
